Sliding panels in the side windows of full-size helicopters are very useful. The cockpit door or entry port can be left closed for a quick transfer of small objects, as the sliding windows can be used for the job.
They are also a safety feature; for example, if a bird strikes the front screen and cracks it, forward vision may be impossible. The pilot's only view forward may then be through the opened sliding panels in the side windows.
